Rugs, Carpets and Carpeting - Cat pee carpet

My cats peed on the carpet in one area. It's pretty bad but only in one specific area about 3' by 3'. Is there anything I can do aside from replacing carpet to remove the stench?

Also, if I go ahead and replace the carpet I'll seal the floor. Any suggestions on what to use to seal it?

Use an exzyme base cleaner to remove the stain and the smell. Good luck.

The carpet can probably be cleaned - they sell products specifically for this purpose at pet stores. The bigger problem is that the amount of urine involved here sounds like more than enough to have penetrated the carpet into the pad and maybe even into the floor. You'll need to pull up the carpet and inspect the pad - if it's been stained, you'll have to replace that section, it can't be cleaned. If the floor is stained, that will need to be sealed. I like to hit both sides of the carpet with cleaner while it's not attached and then tack it back down only when you're sure it's clean (might take more than one application).

What you use to seal the floor depends to some extent on what the floor material is. If it's an unfinished floor, like bare cement or subfloor, we use kilz.

Remove the cat. Seriously, even if you replace the carpet, the cat will always use that spot.
