I have very old parquet floor which I was thinking of sanding and refinishing. I have heard that parquet is a lot thinner than regular hardwood flooring and so more delicate and easier to damage. Any tips about how to sand the floors if I rent a machine to do this? What grade sandpaper should I use? Is it better to get the floor chemically cleaned?

Even though this is a DIY site, I must recommend you hire a pro.

You have no room for error, and a replacement will be the only solution after that. Parquets are cut at 45º angles. It is really easy to trash a floor doing angles, if you don't know exactly what to do and when to do it. www.NOFMA.org use to have the general directions for parquet. I don't know if they are all still there.
