I am thinking about buying a home that needs some improvements. There is carpet on the main level in the family room, dining room and living room. I would like to put some wood flooring down but I have a dog and was wondering if there was a type of wood flooring that would not scratch. Is that even possible?

It's the finish that scratches. I am not aware of any wood finish that can't be scratched.

If you will keep the nails trimmed and round them with a file that will help greatly.

OK - what do people here suggest I put down? I have a golden retriever and dont want to have it all scratched up. Any suggestions?

Carpet...

or trim the nails...no big deal right?

If you put down a wood floor you have to trim the nails regularly, or some people use those 'dog booties"

That's just the way it is. :)

if he's just going to be walking across it, don't worry about it. he won't scratch it up anymore than you will.

if, however, you're planning on playing catch with him in the house, with him sliding all over the place, scratching it up like crazy trying to get some traction, then you've got a problem (and he'll have some major hip problems in no time!!)

You might be a good candidate for a "high pressure" laminate like Wilsonart Estate Plus or Pergo Select. Pricey... but there is good reason for that.

I have not been able to scratch a high pressure laminate, but the standard direct pressure laminates can be scratched.

Thanks I will look into that type of flooring! What about laying it on slab - I have talked to a couple of contractors and one said he just glues it straight ot the floor - the other said he would float it with a pad underneath. Since the home is on a slab what recommendations would everyone give?

If you go with wood it will have to be an engineered type since you are on a slab. No solid hardwood unless you build it up with plywood.

Some engineered floors can be glued down or floated on a pad. Some can only be glued down. It depends on what you choose.

All plastic laminates have to floated on a pad.

It's all in the finish I'm going to be installing cherry floors in my house. Stay away from the poly. finishes being oil or latex. Same concerns so i decided to go with penetrating oil finish. Dog scratches floor simmply sand lightly and reapply doesn't get any better than that. good luck.

So only use an oil or latex finish? Doesnt the poly protect from scratches though? I would have to be resanding every year if not protected by poly correct?

why not laminate flooring?

We have a 135LB Rottie, and he does not leave a scratch on them. Our home, built in the 60's had wood flooring, my dog scratched them very easily when playing and such..

We could not be happier with the laminate flooring, for looks and durability..

We went with Shaw..

Good luck
