Is it better to leave the thermostat at a steady temperature or lower the temperature when I am not home and at night ??

I hear mixed feelings about this issue, however I am looking for the most cost effective method of adjusting my temperature...

All suggestions are welcome..

Thank you in advance....

This has been discussed several times in these forums. If you're more comfortable sleeping with a cooler temperature at night, go ahead and turn it down. The cost of heating the building back up is about the same as what you saved by letting it drop in the first place, so that's a wash. The savings is during the time when the temperature is lower and that's not going to be for very long overnight or while you're gone at work during the day.

Every minute that your system does not run, you are saving money.

Lower temperature during heating always saves on fuel.
The trade off is comfort.

It takes less energy to maintain the house at a lower temperature even a slightly lower temperature. The more you lower, the more you save.

The extra operation to warm the house back up is completely offset by the fact that the furnace does not run at all while the house is cooling off.

It all depends on many things.

-Furnace sized right?
-Windows sealed?
-R-value in attic/walls.

ect.. ect..

So it can go either way.

I do set mine back. And I know I do save $$

I set mine back to 55 at night, furnace never runs. takes about an hour to bring up the temp in the am to 68. then back down to 60 when I am at work, abd back up to 68 till bed time.

They say on an avg, you may save about 3% for every degree you drop the temp.

Me and a neighbor compair each other, both home pretty much set up the same, and my bill was about $30-45 a month cheaper by setting back, where he never did.
