I was about to replace a carpet in a bedroom when I discovered the cushion-backed carpet was glued to a wood floor.
Before I make the commitment to rip this out, what am I in for?
I have scraped glue and stuff off concrete before and it wasn't bad but I'm thinking I won't be able to scrape on wood and that the wood will just keep ripping apart. I'm worried also there might be plywood under there.
Anyone have this experience?

I've done this with mineral spirits and a scraper without tearing up the floor.

Use a 4" razor scraper. That will get it down to the wood and leave the film of adhesive which will be fine to carpet over. If the scraper does not work well you can rent a carpet stripper. I would not recommend any chemical adhesive removers.

I recommended a chemical adhesive remover, Mr. Wachtel said this was a bad idea - go with his suggestion over mine.

Not that it is a bad idea, but there's carpet going back over it. It would be different if they were trying to ressurrect a hardwood floor. I have never been a fan of Kangaback carpet for this very reason. If they're lucky it is taped down.

Thanks guys. I just happen to have a 4 inch scraper so I'll get at it and yes I do plan to lay carpet over it again.
