I have a Trane XE78 gas heating system. There are two in the house, one up, one down stairs. The one upstairs works fine (so I don't think it's a gas problem). The downstairs one responds to the thermostat and goes on when I up the heat, but the air blows cold. Any quick fix suggestions?

If both furnaces are the same, have someone turn up the thermostat while you watch the burner area of the working one then repeat for the non heating furnace. What does the working furnace do the non working one does not? It could be a "glow" which lights the gas. If no glow on the good one, how about a clicking sound or a pilot light?

Double-check that the gas is indeed not shut off by accident.
There is a valve very near each furnace perhaps even inside the furnace.
So it is certainly possible to have no gas at just one furnace.
Turn valve handle counter-clockwise to open.

Handle in line with pipe = open = on.
Handle crosswise to pipe = closed = off.

For reference for people searching through - the problem was a dead limit switch. The upper (or right side) switch which trips if the system gets too hot had failed which shut the thing down. Turns out it was an easy fix if you had the tester and a spare switch.
