I was wondering if anybody could tell me if this idea that someone put in my head will work.I have a dug well at my cottage and it is very high in iron, sulphur and maganese the idea is to use a pool filter & fill it with greensand or other media to at the least bit reduce the problem to an acceptible level. I just don't know if a pool filter will hold pressure or if it is only a pass through filter.

First of all, you need to provide far more information in order for anyone to provide you with an idea of how to handle it.
Secondly, why try to re-invent the wheel? There are many acceptable systems that should be able to handle your iron, sulfur, etc., with economy and efficiency.
Get your water tested and let us know. Gives us more details on the cottage, plumbing, pressure, weather conditions, available size, etc.
My first impression is forget the pool filter approach, and find another person to influence you on water treatment.

I agree. Why are you trying to create something questionable for $5 when you can solve the problem for $7? You don't want to use a pool filter. That would be similar to using a muzzle loading rifle to shoot armor piercing depleted uranium rounds....

so how do you solve the problem for 7 bucks? I have an iron problem and no filters so I would be interested in a cheap solution.

The reason for asking is that a pool filter witch holds a certain kind of filter media inside to filter pool water and is readily available second hand & costs considerably less than the iron filters. The iron filters I rarely see available second hand & are rather expensive new. So why not change the media in the pool filter to what your needs are and there you have it, a homemade iron filter. I just don't justify 2000 bucks for an iron filter. For the little amount of water we use & what we use it for at the cottage specially a cottage on leased land. This is why a pool filter seemed worth looking into. if it was a house I would pay whatever it took to get good water.
