My largest gap is about 1/8 inch. My question is should i use caulking or wood putty to fill these gaps. I am trying to avoid cracking. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Scott

If you will be painting the crown, a good grade of latex caulking will suffice. Wipe any excess off with a wet sponge. It is pliable enough not to crack in normal situations.

For that large of a crack I would caulk it and let the caulk go "down" inside the crack, let it dry and caulk again where/when it shrinks.
