We are looking to put a "frieze" style carpet down in our basement. We are looking at 2 samples, one from CarpetsPlus colortile and another from Flooring America. The one from Flooring America has the color we like and is $4.15/ square foot material only but it is also more expensive than the one from CarpetsPlus by 80 cents and also seems to be harsher as far as running your hand across the carpet. I liike the CarpetsPlus carpet because it is softer and cheaper but we can't find the color we like. What determines whether a carpet is worth its price or simply overpriced?

Secondly, what is a good pad to put underneath this type of carpet in a basement? One salesman from one store highly recommended the heavier rubber type pad while the salesman from a different store recommended 1/2" foam pad. Thanks for any input or suggestions.
