Walls and Ceilings - Sheetrock on top of plaster wall

I have a 105 year old house with plaster over brick walls. In the kitchen, a previous owner glued nasty looking fake green tile (4 ft high by 8 ft long) to the walls.

Is there any safe, good way to adhere 3/8 inch drywall DIRECTLY to the plaster without using furring strips or screws?

I would recommend that some kind of fastener is used. As you will be taping the seems anyway, the screws are the easy part. If you didn't want to predrill for tap-cons, you can fire a fastener in with a Ramset gun.

If you are very "anti-screw", I imagine that you could glue it, stick it to the wall, and then put a support on it while the adhesive dried, although I again recommend fastening it. You may need it to meet code anyway.
