My truss system on the basement ceiling is 24" oc (more or less). I want to hang drywall.
Is it okay to use 1/2 " drywall for the ceiling or should I go with 5/8" .
(Also, I've heard there may be a special drywall for ceiling applications - any comments?)
The largest room is 15' x 14'.
Thanks...
...Mike

5/8" rock is always preffered for ceilings but 1/2" is used often on ceilings. I'm not aware of any special 'ceiling' drywall unless they are referring to 5/8"

There are a number of manufactures that now make ceiling board in 1/2".
USG, Georgia Pacific, to name a couple. (It might not be available in your area)
Ceiling board is made with a higher density and guaranteed not to sag. If you use it make sure you get the written literature on it as you need it to back up a claim.
We have had very good success with it here in the damp Northwest.
Regular 1/2" will work OK, just make sure that you keep the temperature up and the humidity down until the drywall has been finished and sealed.
My .02 :)

1/2 will work o.k. I personally prefer 5/8 on 24" joists, but haven't run into problems using 1/2.
I am not familiar with any "extra strong" ceiling boards, although it doesn't mean they don't exist. Maybe they aren't in my area, or suppliers may not carry it.
