Solid Hardwood, Engineered and Laminate Flooring - How to properly fasten a spline

I need to use a spline when I continue my flooring from my existing floor. Do I glue it into the groove of my existing floor, give it a day or so to dry, and the nail it.

Or do I glue and nail at the same time so that if there is movement, the glue will set in the final position.

Or, do I not need to glue - the nails will hold the spline into the groove.

Gluing is optional, but I do.

Make sure the splines fit snugly and dry fit another row, sometimes they are too fat. If everything looks good, remove the dry fit row and proceed as follows.

Use some yellow wood glue on the spline and snug it in the groove. Use some short scraps of flooring to help you keep the angle of the spline correct as you blind nail it in.

Place you floor nailer on the spline with short scraps of wood right next to it on "both" sides and blind nail, move the scraps down 6" to 8" and nail again. Just keep repeating.

If you don't use scraps of flooring the spline "may" angle down too much and the next row won't fit correctly.

Great tips Jerry! Another word of caution; don't glue the spline and leave it overnight. Finish the next row at all costs. Chances are you won't get the right fit the next day.
