The last few vacuum cleaners didn't work out well. Our last upright, recommended by a friend, didn't last 6 months. Now its a door stop!
Is there such a thing as a good vacuum? Looking to spend $200-$300. Have a two story century home, lots of dust. Thinking maybe cannisters are more efficient? Not sure if anyone makes a good machine. Maybe we are expecting too much for too little, do you have to spend $400 or more for a quality machine?

Thanks for any input, really confused. Tired of buying products that disappoint.

I went to a sears parts store and bought 2 reconditioned canisters w/power heads for 120.00 each and still going strong after 10 yrs and 3 teenagers...1 for upstairs and for down...
