Hello all I have an issue with my ceiling fan. The fan and lights work but the outlet on the wall does not.

In the box on the wall there are 3 different sets of wires coming into the box.. In the kitchen there is a light and a seperate light and ceiling fan. So there are two switches one for the ceiling fan/light and one for a seperate light.

Now there are 3 sets of wires

1st. one has red--black--white--copper I have the red to red and black to black and copper to ground on switch.

2nd Same as above

3rd just had white-- black -- copper

now all 3 white are plugged off together

the regular light works with the switch with the red to switch and black to switch and ground to ground.

the ceiling fan works but the switch does not with the black to switch and red to switch.

I am totally lost on what to do. I just want the switch to control the light and/or fan I dont need 2 seperate for the fan and the light.

So the ceilingfan/light has power but the switch does not work

?Waht you you mean gound on switch? Do you mean a black colored screw (which is common, not ground), or a green hex screw?

How is your ceiling fan hooked up inside it's outlet box? Is it connected to a black, red, and white or just a black and white?

In the separate light fixture box, is it wired with the possibility of adding a fan later? Is there a red wire capped off?

What kind of switch are you wiring the fan to? Jsut a regular wall switch, or a special fan switch?

I'm going to ASSUME that your fan is wired to a black-white-red combo, there is a red wire capped off inside the separate fixture, and you are using ordinary toggle switches. If this is NOT the case please let me know before you try anything.

Connect all the whites together. Connect all the bare ground wires together, and/or ground the switches. Connect the black from the wireset WITHOUT the red to one terminal on EACH switch. You will need to cut an extra length of wire from somewhere to tie the two switches together.

Now you have two choices. You can have one switch control the fan and light together, and the second switch control the other light (and fan, should you had one, together). Or you can have on switch control both lights and the fan (or both fans, should you add one). Three choices, really, you could get some proper fan switches and have separate control of each light and fan from the wall. In any case . . . to control the fan and light together, and other light separate . . . connect both the black and red from one wireset to the remaining terminal on one switch . . . and both the black and red to the remaining terminal on the other switch. If you want to control both lights and fan(s) together, connect both blacks to the remaining terminal on one switch, and both reds to the remaining terminal on the other switch.
