I built a new house in OCT 2005. My ac system has 2 return airs using 18x24x1 Z-pleated filters in the ceiling. I also have a media filter in the unit in the attic that is 20x24x4. I was told that I could elimate the media filter since I had filters in the returns. They said it puts to muh drag on the blower.Does anyone have a expert opinion about this. Thanks in advance for any replies. Danny

That depends. If the ductwork was designed with these filters in mind, then they should probably be there. Only way to know is have the static checked. In the meantime, keep the filters clean.

Like Thermofridge said, if the system is designed for all of this filtration, fine, but I doubt that it was. Personally, I would put cheap fiberglass filters in the return grates & keep the media filter. Even the fiberglass filters might cause too much restriction. I find the thought of only two returns in a new house totally absurd. Here, code requires a return in any room which can be closed off by a door to have a return. The exceptions are kitchens & bathrooms.
