I just discovered some black mold in my newly built home's attic. The mold seems to be coming out of the soffit vents into the attic. It is in about a 5'X5' area on the roof sheeting. The attic is vented with ridge vents and soffit vents. The house is a year old. There is a bathroom directly below the mold. The bathroom vent is vented through the roof...near where mold is growing. We live in the northeast.

What could be done to get rid of the mold and what could possibly cause it?

Sounds like to me the attic needs a exhaust fan to keep air circulating..you are having warm moist air coming up from the vent..meeting cold winter air for the past serveral months. This is keeping the area from drying out. Check to make sure that the vent has no cracks or loose fittings in it. You may want to consider extending the vent further out from the roof. Clean the affected areas with a bleach mixture 1 part bleach 4 parts water. Then seal the affected wood...after you give it a few days to dry out. This will help keep moisture from settling in. If the mold damage is beyond cleaning...meaning major areas or wood is falling apart. You may want to contact the contractor who build the home or was in charge of that aspect. Also, check the see what your home owners covers. Less than a year old you shouldnt be having problems like this. I would imagine there is a flaw in the construction or design.

Two parts here:

1 clean the mold - docduck covered that.
2 get rid of the source of the mold - docduck also covered this, but I think more emphasis should be placed because you have to stop the water problem or the mold will just keep coming back.

Make sure there are no air leaks around perimeter of attic floor where warm, moist air can leak into attic. Also make sure the flashing around the roof vent is secure and not allowing moisture to enter attic. Run bathroom vent fan unit while bathing and at least twenty minutes afterwards to make sure warm, moist air is exhausted.
