Is there anything special I need to know about installing plastic shutters? The siding on my house is hard shingles-- not sure what, it's just not wood, vinyl or aluminum. Thanks for the help.

Just a suggestion. I have had to go and re attach shutters that have blown in the wind and stripped out the original plastic barbed fasteners, so here goes: HD carries a 1/4" x 3" cabinet bolt with a 1" diameter head and an allen head indentation in the middle. Drill a 5/16 hole in each corner and at mid stile where the rail joins it, and corresponding 3/16 holes in the siding. Take a permanent marker and mark the back of each shutter with a number and mark the siding with the same number where it will be hidden by the shutter, so you can remember where it went should you ever have to take them down and replace them. Now, you can take an allen wrench and install the bolts. They will hold much better than the plastic ones. You can prime and paint the heads the color of your shutters.

i agree with everything chandler suggested. i would add that after seeing the warpage on the units i took off my house an extra pair of fasteners in the center might be worthwhile. the plastic anchors just don't hold and the little plastic screw covers seem to dissapear.

The siding on my house is hard shingles-- not sure what...

If its the old asbestos shingles (over 30 years old), then you will want to experiment with drilling those puppies. They can be hard as glass or wet and soft,,you can break shingles, etc. So find a scrap to practice drilling. The larger the hole, the much harder it is to drill. Definately try before you commit.

I appreciate the advise. Feedback: The shingles were not too hard to predrill.
The shutters--I also pre-drilled 6 holes in them all first. I used a plastic template that squares itself on the corner and has various hole locations to drill guide. Lastly--Lowes shutters come with both plastic inserts and metal screws (3") with matching colored heads. (HD shutters only have plastic inserts) I used the Lowes type with the screws. The Lowes shutters also seem to be truer, perhaps from better more supported packaging.
Thanks again.

You may want to purchase the bolts I suggested, to have on hand when the wind pulls the shutters off the screw heads. Just a suggestion.
