Hello,

I'm in the planning stages of the remodeling of my basement,
and I have a question about the dryer vent for the laundry room:
right now I just have a 4" duct hood (that has about 1ft of duct)
going outside through the rim joist, and a metal flex duct going
from the hood straight down to the electric dryer.
How did you deal with this duct? did you come all the way down
to the floor level with a round duct and (if needed) framed around it?

Thanks in advance, :D
S.

There is a duct that has the same volume but is designed in more of a rectangular shape so it will fit between the studs. It telescopes and has opposing 4" take offs at each end, one to attach to the dryer and one to go out the wall. It only extends from 27" to 48", so I am not sure if it will work in your situation. You will need to use aluminum smooth duct from a lower floor to an upper floor exit to keep lint from catching on the ribs and causing a stop-up.

Thanks Larry, I will look into this. Do you remember if the rectangular duct is still deep enough to require a complete cut of the top plate or if I can get away with a partial cut?

I believe by being elongaged it will allow partial cutting of the plate.

Stefano,

The set up you describe is just like the one I had in one of my former homes. I never had an issue with lint build up although I did check the dryer vent every few months. However, the washer / dryer were in the unfinished part of the basement.

Clogged dryer vents were the #1 cause of home fires in my community last year. Whatever is done, don't give the lint a place to be trapped.
