Hello, I need some help please! We are moving in the Fall, so I need an inexpensive window treatment.
We just purchased 2 new recliners in a brick burgandy colour, they are a little more contemporary in style, same as the sofa and loveseat. My walls are taupe and so is the carpet and verticals on the window. Right now I have a topper that hangs in 2 circle drops and the side panels start wide at the rod and end tapered, they are blue and match the old chairs. I like how they hide the edges and top of the verticals, since I don't plan on removing the verticals, what can I go with?

I originally thought I'd go with 2 simple panels, one on each side. But then the top of my ugly white rod pocket will show, and the top of the verticals will too?

Any ideas on style, and should I drive myself crazy trying to find the same shade of brick/burgandy or will taupe look okay?

Thanks Lori

taupe curtains on a taupe painted wall with taupe carpet? sounds pretty bland. i'd look for burgundy or better yet, a print with burgundy in it. if you make the new swags yourself, you could make some throw pillows, too.

casual scarf swags would be easy to make by hemming a long length of fabric on all sides. or just about as easy, would be to cover a cornice board to hide the top of the verticals.

what color are the sofa & loveseat?

LOL, that made me chuckle, because the last curtain I made was a disaster!! I'm not sure I want to raise my blood pressure again so fast!

The sofa and loveseat are the main problem for me. They are both matching, made of olefin and multi-coloured. They are contemporary in styling, and the colours remind me of someone taking several size paint brushes etc and just slashing colour all over! The main colour is beige, with burgandy, olive green(I hate green)chocolate brown, and a goldish colour. I don't think fabric with a design would harmonize, might be too busy>?

I know doing the taupe would be bland, but I figured it would be the easiest, since we're moving this year anyway. I didn't want to bring in too many other colours, hall is beige/burgandy, kitchen is slate blue/beige and dining room is light/dark burgandy. All the rooms are visible to eachother. Isn't their a rule about choosing 5 colours....?....

This decorating stuff is hard on a budget!

you've never mixed 2 patterns before? it seems like you could go with a simple stripe like this (http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductsHOM.aspx?DeptID=25437&CatID=31239&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=G&GrpTyp=SIZ&ItemID=0dd4355&ProdSeq=22&Cat=20-something&Dep=&PCat=&PCatID=28492&RefPage=ProductList&Sale=&ProdCount=27&RecPtr=&ShowMenu=&TTYP=&ShopBy=0&RefPageName=CategoryAll%252Easpx&RefCatID=28492&RefDeptID=25437) but it sounds like since you're moving anyway, you don't really care, in which case the taupe would be fine.

I do like those, and they may look okay. They wouldn't hide the tracking for the verticals in the centre though.

It's not that I don't care, because in order to sell, I want the curtains to look like they belong in the room...not just something ugly just because we want to move. The window is the focal point, so the window treatment needs to pull the room together. I wish I had a plainer sofa and loveseat, then I would definately go with a pattern on the window.

I think I'll look for something like you suggested though, it may just look great, especially if the colours go well. We don't have JC Penney here in Canada, but I check out Sears etc....

thanks again, Lori

If your windows are the focal point, then you need to add color to them. Using the same color as the wall, will make them fade into the background. You can use a solid color, just pull one the of colors from the couch. I'd go with the burgundy also, since it'll also blend in with the hall and DR. You might want to think "texture" rather than prints.

You don't think it'll be too much burgandy on one floor? It would be my preferance though, since I don't care for the green.

I was looking at the Sears catalogue, there is something called 3pc. metal scarf set. So instead of letting the scarf hang down in a swoop in the middle and exposing the verticals, it holds them up. It would have 2 smaller swoops, but the top would be straight across.

I also like the texture idea, it would be much more subtle. I'm not usually afraid of mixing patterns, but this sofa set is really difficult to find anything that looks good with it.

Thanks! Lori

No, I don't think there would be too much burgundy. This would balance the color around the room. If you really hate the idea, then you need to go with what you like, but I think it'll be nice. I'm not familar with the scarf set, but scarfs can be a bear to dress. Maybe these make it easier :thinker: If you like it, then go with it :)
