I have recently noctied rust stains running down the sides of my chimney. I heard that this could be a problem. Where might these stains be originating?

do you have a steel cap on the chimney ? anything bolted to it ? even an old fastener left by a contractor may cause this.

This happened to me in one of my houses that had a wood stove. Turned out it wasn't rust at all, but creosote. It was condensing on the underside of the steel cap and running down the sides of the chimney.
