What is the 'standard' height for a chandelier on a 9' ceiling?

The one I am going to install has a chain that the chandelier hangs from out of the main unit...I need to adjust the chain for the chandelier to drop from but don't know what the right length is...

I don't think there is a right height. Certainly there are standard heights used by contractors. But for best fit here are some factors to consider:

1. Are you putting a table under it or will people walk under it? If people will walk under it I would suggest that the head-knocking portion be no lower than 6'6", at least in my house. For a table, maybe someone else has a figure.

2. Are you planning to distribute the light by reflection off the ceiling or directly toward the table or the floor? The configuration of the fixture will make a big difference in how high it should be hung for best effect.

I would suggest that you leave the wires and chain as long as possible, hang it temporarily and observe it under all conditions, adjust its height for different effects, and then cut the chain for permanent installation.

General guide as noted above is 30-35" above dining tables, anywhere else is no lower then 7'. Still its mostly personal preference. Make sure your mounting box is sturdy enough and rated for the proper weight.
