I am considering building a passive solar home out of insulated concrete blocks. If i use a colored split-faced block my insulation and outside finish are done. The two companies i found that make this type of block are CBIS and Thermablock. I was wondering if anyone has used either of these poducts. If so, what are your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Check the R-value of the block you want to use and check with your local building inspections department. Most codes require a minimum R-value for residential construction but often do not have a requirement for commercial construction. Just because you have seen the block being used for stores and offices does not mean it will be acceptable for residential use.

Thanks for the reply Dane. Since my last post i have found a local block manufacturer that uses Korfil Hi-R molds and polystyrene inserts. If i go with the biggest width they offer (12") and fill the rest of the block, my best day r-value is about 12. So it looks like i have to go back to the drawing board.
