I want to hang a 3 or 4 foot floating shelf with a framed print above it on my livingroom wall. The wall is 9 feet long and 42 inches from the ceiling to the top of my tv. The print is 21x17 (framed). On the shelf I want to put a couple of folk art pieces. How far from the shelf should I hang the print and can I put smaller floating shelves a little higher on either side of the larger middle one? On the opposite wall in this room is my sofa and a large quilt hanging above it.

i need more info, please......
is the print 21W x 17L? or vice versa?
are you wanting to put the shelf & print directly centered over the TV??
is the TV in the center of the 9' wall??
my first thought is that nothing should be above the tv on this wall......it'll look squooshed in the little 42" space.

The print is 21" long X 17" high. Here's a picture of the wall. The speakers and subwoofer will be gone. Any suggestions would be great.

sorry - i'm at work & i can't see your picture (employer has photobucket blocked).
what about just sitting the print ON the shelf & leaning it up against the wall? set the print off center, then stagger objects to the sides of it & maybe a small one in front of it to the side.
if you really want to hang the print on the wall, only hang it about 4 or 5" above the shelf. you want it to relate to the shelf, not float above it. and again, set at least one object in front of it to one side.
personally, i don't care for the idea of the one big shelf in the middle with 1 smaller shelf on each side. it's usually more interesting to do this assymetrically. could you work it out to have the one big shelf on one side of the tv and the 2 smaller shelves on the other side? either one directly above the other, or staggered. if by "tv" you really mean an entertainment center, you could just put something tall on top of it to fill in that area of wall space.

Thanks for your suggestions Annette! I probably will sit the print on the shelf instead of above it. My main concern was how much to put on the wall without things getting "lost" (to few things) or "crowded" (too many things) on it. I'll try to remember to post a picture when it's done.
