Im installinga ceiling fan and have a few questions. Ill try to make this as clear as possible.
The fan is a Casablanca (if it matters). There is a black plate that is to be installed over the electrical that the fan attaches to. A long lag bolt goes through it, into the beam. I cut away the rock and put this piece right on the electrical box. Then, there is the piece of the fan that will accept the down rod. This piece gets attached to the black plate. The problem is, the 8-32 screws that came with the fan just barely reach the black plate. So, Im wondering if that black plate was supposed to get installed over the sheetrock. I find it hard to believe that is the case, but it would give an extra 1/2 inch that would make the screws reach.
Anyway, Imnot concerned about those screws because I am using a medallion. So , I need longer screws anyway. But, the medallion is a full inch thick and the screws that come with it are 8-32, 3 inch log. Well, the same problem, they just reach, but not enough to thread them.
Now Im looking for 8-32 that are 4 inches long and cant seem to find them, so Im thinking maybe they arent made in that length.
Am I doing something wrong here?
That black plate that comes with the fan MUST go right on the box (not the rock) right?
And the fan does go ON the medallion - right? I dont cut the medallion and set the round peice that accepts the down rod inside it do I? Even that had me thinking because the medallion isnt really solid, its like a light composite o some type. I would think I would want to tighten these screws super tight figuring a fan with the motion and vibration could loosen things up. So I would expect the medallion to be solid like wood so that you could really drive the screws home - maybe you still can, but it seems lightweight.
Any way, any thoughts?

The box needs secured to the structure.
The edge of the box needs to be flush with the ceiling.
The mounting plate mates up with the edge of the box, right against the ceiling.

I re-rad my post. To tell you the truth , Im not sure why I wrote that I cut out the rock. I did have to chip away at it - when I installed the box and then sheetrocked, the box was about 1/8 below the rock - maybe not even. So it is nothing substantial.
I just dont get why the screws barely make it into the mounting plate... maybe i could get one or two turns to tighten them. Shouldnt they go in a good 1/2 inch so nothing loosens up?

In the case of the Casablanca fan, since their mounting is a little different than normal:
Get longer screws that attach the crossbar to the outlet box.
Put the medallion between the crossbar and the outlet box. Attach the fan canopy directly to the crossbar, now the screws that came with it should be long enough.
The crossbar is supposed to sit on top of the drywall, not up inside the box.
