I'm installing a new fan with a light kit where the previous owner of our house had one(took it as part of the sale). When I look at the wires, there are only white, black, and green ones visible and accessible and when tested only the black and white return a reading. The wall has a seperate control already for both a fan and a light, but when connected all together, the only way to get the light kit to work is to daisychain its wires to the wires in the fan to have it controlled by the pull strings. Needless to say, this does not meet the WAF(Wife Approval Factor), so what can I do to try to get both wall controls working seperately?

Leave the switch on all the time and buy a remote for the fan.

What kind of wall switch has the separate control for the fan and light? If there is only a black and white wire, it sounds like the wall switch was specific to the previous fan. As the previous respondant stated, the only way to remedy this is to get an appropriate switch and receiver for the new fan.

If the switches for the fan and light are just ordinary wall switches, and you're SURE that they controlled the fan and light separately, there must be another wire in hiding.
