my entry / living area is 26' x 16' and has an 18' ceiling. my home is very ineffecient because this room is no more than a giant heat pocket. will one large fan (60" or so) be adequate for this size of room or will two smaller fans (48" or so) provide better effeciency? also, will i be okay if i only drop the fans 48" to 60". thanks in advance.

The more fans you install the more air it will move providing better circulation for air to be heated/cooled. I would suggest putting two fans in the room evenly spaced out and the height you hang them is really up to you for cosmetic looks. With two fans you should be good enough at circulating the air that the 12" difference in hanging wont matter nearly as much.

Secondly . . . as far as the two vs one fan issue . . . based on the shape of the room I would go with two fans, but I wouldnt go any smaller than 52", especially as your ceiling is so high.
Thirdly, make sure you use quality fans. I recommend industrial fans. They move more air, use less energy, and are more effective on high ceilings. If you dont want industrial fans get a fan with an American made motor and/or K55 motor and/or XLP motor.
Fourth of all . . . 60" drop minimum, unless you're using industrial fans. 18' is a tall ceiling.
