I have three recessed halogen lights in my kitchen, and one doesn't work. I bought new light bulbs, (at great expense, I might add!) and replaced the one that doesn't work. no dice. So, I wonder if anyone can help me work out what the problem may be, and how I may go about fixing it.

I'm not sure if these lights all run from one transformer, (or if they run from a transformer at all, but I am pretty sure that all halogen lights need a transformer) or whether they are built in transformers. I got in through the opening in the ceiling and wiggled the wires around to see if it was a loose connection, which made no difference.

can anyone help me with diagnostic tests to find out where the problem is. I think that if I needed to replace wiring, I could open the floor above the kitchen, as it's kind of a loft storage area. I guess I'm looking for a way to find out where the problem lies without undoing all the wiring etc.

thanks,
g

The first thing to figure out is whether this is a line-voltage fixture or a low-voltage fixture. Look at one of the two working bulbs. There should be a voltage (e.g., 12V or 120V) marked on the bulb.

By the way, never touch a halogen bulb with your bare fingers. Always wear gloves to keep skin oil off the bulb.

Thanks,

that jogged my memory... it's a 12V light, so I guess it has a transformer somewhere...

the lights have shades and a little metal cap on the bulb, so the fingers on lights shouldn't be a problem.

what now?

thanks,
