OK. Here it goes. Was at my local Home improvement store and they had a ceramic tile that I liked and it was reduced to only 98 per tile (12"x12") regular priced @ 1.98 ea. They had an overstock and I liked the color (PEI 4 whatever that means). So I said what the heck lets try it and bought 125 sq ft . This is what I am working with, kitchen 7x10 and entry way 4x5. Have a crawl space underneath with 16" joists. (will that be enough support for ceramic?) I have vinyl currently and assume I must remove. What thickness of backerboard should I use? My friend has a wet saw so that is a plus. So honestly is this a very difficult project that I am looking at? I just did a 10x12 bedroom with laminate flooring and after many 12 packs and cursing from start to finish I got it done. And looks good. I guess I am looking for some moral support. Thanks Mike

You can do it.
The Pei is a wear rating on the tile, 4 is very good, stuff is strong, like bull.
Having access to a wet saw will be a big help.
The vinyl must come out and if there is a 1/4" layer of wood under it that has to come out too. Any plywood under 3/8" can compress easily causing tile to crack and really offers no structural support to the floor. Best way is to set a circular saw to cut through that wood underlayment and do 2' squares then lift with a pry bar.
16"OC is good but what is the size of the joist and what is the length of the unsupported span?
What kind of flooring is under the vinyl, how thick is it?

Post back so we can continue and get you on your way to some tile setting. :)

I agree with Tileguybob.
Also I would like to add that if you needed a 12 pack for the bathroom, you may way to get three 12er's for this project. And as for the cursing, send the kids to their friends house. :blah:

Good luck with your project
