I want to buy a sander and am wondering what would be a good one to buy for general home improvement and some wood working projects.

I would suggest a randon orbital sander for general, overall sanding. Lots of guys buy belt sanders and tear up everything they sand due to too much power. Detail sanders are just that. made for small areas and finishing. An orbital sander will do most of the jobs you need done. Good luck.

Ryobi makes a nice variable speed random orbital sander, I just pick one up to refinish doors a months ago. Also check out this or last months popular mechanics magazine, they dedicated the front cover to sanders and compare many of them.

Another vote for random orbital
You can actually do alot of general house-hold-type projects with a good palm sander
