I am preparing to install an acrylic bathtub surround. Is there an easy way remove the old caulk from a porcelain tub without scratching the tub ?

I have always used a plastic putty knife. You can get a pretty sharp edge on them and they do not scratch. There is a tool which is also plastic that is made specifically for caulk removal. It has a hook on the end that cuts and grabs the caulk. Good luck.

If the tub is cast iron porcelain, with the exception of a hammer, you could almost use anything, but you definitely don't want to use sharp metal. After using plastic scrapers, you could use MEK (Methyl Ethyl Keytone) to remove the final residue. It has a low flash point, but still must be used in a ventilated area. The porcelain is impervious to this type cleaner.
