Hi,

I have a hairline crack that runs up the side of the toilet. I'm not sure what this part of the toilet is called, but I think it is called the tank. It is not a very long crack but when the water fills up the tank after flushing, the slow drip begins. In light of the fact that I don't have the funds to replace it, is there some epoxy or glue that might fill the crack?

Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Thanks

Cracked toilets should be replaced. If cost is an issue, shop around. You can often find low cost economy toilets at the large home centers. Sometimes you can even find close-out specials or display models at deep discount prices.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Jim. Since the damaged piece is the tank, can I simply replace just the tank? And if so, is it something I could do?

Thanks

Many toilet components are sold seperately. Installing a tank is easily done and should you decide to go this route, let us know and we can help you.
Should the crack decide to let go, it will be a real mess. Especially if you are not home at the time. I would suggest turning off the supply valve under the toilet before leaving the house and flushing the toilet. This way, there will be only a small amount of water in the tank. Good luck.

I have included a link for total toilet replacement. You would only need the tank part but thought you might want to see what is involved.

I went to Home Depot yesterday and naturally they didn't carry the brand of toilet I have. It was Briggs by the way. One of the associates said it may leak if I just buy a tank of another brand? So do I need to replace the whole toilet? Having trouble locating a plumbing supply that carries Briggs.

As long as the bolt holes line up, I see no problem with just replacing the tank. You also need the seal that goes between the tank and bowl. I believe it comes with the tank anyways. May look a little different but maybe you can find a design that is similar to your current toilet.
If you go with a whole new toilet, The American Standard Cadet sells for about $100 complete.
