Went to purchase some new light fixtures for the kitchen and hallway and on the box it said if you have a home built before 1985 to make sure the wiring is rated up to 90 degrees celcius. Is there an easy way to tell maybe by pulling out the old fixture to see if the wiring is sufficient, etc., or is this only possible by getting an electrician out to check?

Thanks...

What year was your wiring installed? If it is close to 1985 then it could go either way. If it is pre 1980 then for sure it is not 90º wire.
If you can see the cover on the cable it will have the info on it.

1981 was the year that it was built. I'll just open it up and take a look to see what I can see. Thank you for your help.

If you have non-metallic cable, commonly called romex, the 90 degree wiring will have NM-B on the jacket. If it just has NM it is not 90 degree rated. You should be able to check near your panel or exposed wiring in the basement ceiling.

Look near the panel or anywhere the cabling is exposed. The same wire was used for whole house.
