Hi,

I just removed the old wall paper from my kitchen in an old (100 yr) house. The paper came down easy in most places, I had to scrape it away in a few, but not to bad.

It appears to me that underneath is old wood/wood paneling that has a very thin coating on it. It is paper thin, white, it seems like a painted on threading, it rips easily and is also itchy.

I want to repaint the room, not a big fan of wallpaper, but not sure where to go. Do I have to take off this coating or can I leave it, and should I prime it before I paint it. Any help would be very much appreciated, I am still new to owning a home and have a lot to learn yet.

thanks much
Jeff

Your description is kinda vague, but it sounds to me like a fabric backing from an older wallcovering. Either its from the one you recently pulled, or a previous one that was pulled, and then re-hung over. At any rate, I would remove it before painting. A sound, stable surface is best to work with. I would also wash all the old adhesive off, and prime with an alkyd or oil primer to lock down any residual adhesive/whatnot before painting.
