I am putting in a small upstairs shower, stool and sink...how close to the p-traps of the units do the vents have to be?...

This is a local code issue. The International Plumbing Code is very different from the Uniform Plumbing Code in this area along with drainage.

You need to see what your code is, then an answer can be provided.
