I'm replacing my Electric downdraft cooktop with a gas downdraft cooktop. I need 110 to run the blower and electronic starter on the burners. The only electric outlet immediately available is 220 that was used for the electric cooktop. The electric cooktop had wiring to reduce the 220 to 110 to run the downdraft blower. A gas line is no problem as a gas line was installed when the house was builtl.

Can the 220 outlet be converted to a 110 outlet??? I no longer need the 220 for anything....

If it has separate ground (bare or green) and neutral (white) wires, you can use the wires for a 120V outlet. If it only has one or the other, you cannot.

You will need to replace the breaker with a 15 or 20A one.

Yes, however, with differing degrees of safety depending upon your existing wiring.
1) If it is 2 wire romex it is recomended that you run a seperate #14 green wire from the "J" box to a metalic cold water pipe.
2) If it is 2 individual conductors enlosed in either matalic pipe or flexible conduit, you have all the ingredients including a mechanical ground.
3)The other alternatives which are commonly available are 3&4 wire romex.

Now its your turn to tell us about the wiring in the "J" you wish to convert to 120V.
