There are plumbing system protective devices such as for a tank water heater or a clothes washer. Most just will shut off the water then maybe sound an audible alarm at best. What is done or what is available if the home owner needs to have an alarm that gives better warnings that a plumbing event has occurred?

If you mean a flood/water detection sensor, there are a number of wired and wireless versions made for connection to alarm systems.

Ge/Sentrol makes these models. (http://www.geindustrial.com/cwc/products/ge-interlogix?pnlid=9&famid=55&catid=1137&id=5500ph&lang=en_US)

Honeywell/Ademco makes this one. (http://www.security.honeywell.com/hsce/products/sensor/sp/21672.html)

There are also similar devices made by companies like GRI, Amseco, and several others.

The details of what the alarm does depends on the specific system. Some do situations like this more gracefully than others.

The plumbing devices will take action such as shutting off the water to a tank water heater which will limit the amount of flooding. If I add the suggested devices to the plumbing devices, then they will do the alarms I am interested in. It is interesting that there are not (I guess) devices that will combine a plumbing protective action and enunciate a proper alarm. Maybe insufficient market.

It's possible that someone's making one that has auxilliary contacts that can be connected to an alarm system, but I've not tripped over one. It's a good idea, but such a tiny niche market that no one's bothered to fill.

I stand corrected: The WaterCop system (http://www.absoluteautomation.com/watercop/) apparently has aux contacts. It just seems that that fact isn't in the product blurbs from most of the retailers that sell it.

I'll have to file that one away.
