My street lamp was broken off at base. After turning off all power, I removed the lamp and post. What must I do with the wiring in the ground?

If you disconnect it and cut it off at the switch box where it orginates you can just leave it there.

Then you have a problem. You can not leave a live wire burried in the ground.

There's often an electrical box on the side of the house where the cable comes out of the house. From there, some conduit will go straight down into the ground. Take a walk around your house and see if there is anything that looks like this. The box may or may not have a receptacle in it.
