A ac contractor told me that you can't use a single stage heat pump with a variable speed air handler and that it needs to have a two stage compressor heat pump for it to work with the air handler. Is this true?

Not for all brands, but I can't speak for every one of them.

Rheem has single stage compressors with varible speed AH units

I am not sure about the heat pump end of it.. (They are not used up here).. But I do have a Trane single stage A/C with a variable speed furnace. I'll look into it and see if it's true or not.

He stated that you can't have a single stage heat pump runing full blast with a variable speed air handler and that I whould need to buy the two stage heat pump? Anwers like this made me decide to become a informed consumer before I lay out my hard earned green. This may be true, but if it's not I know what company to stay away from.

You might be able to use the single stage, but it may not work as efficiently as the two stage, also, if you live in a warm climate where you only run the heat a few weeks a year, you might want to consider not buying a heat pump and going with a "regular" non-heat pump unit, they use more electricity when heating than a heat pump, but there are less parts inside to go bad, like the reverseing valve and all its switches, tubing, and so on, they are also less money than a heat pump. Just my opinion.

Rent made a good point, being that you are in FL. Heat pump may not be worth the extra dough.. Just go with a regular A/C system. and do electric heat strip.

I checked with another guy he said you don't have to do two stage system on a variable speed system.

Where does the heat strip go? In side the air handler? Thanks for the info on the heat pump. A local contrator that told me this bull is comeing out this week to give me a bid on my job. Is there a good web site out there were I can read up on the facts about the newer AC and air handlers. I can see trusting a professional opinion could cost me a lot of money.
