I'm hopeing you guys can help me. I'm down to picking one of these two units and the main decideing factor is humidity control and reliability being I live in central florida. The first brand is the lennox elite series HPX16 with the two stage heat pump with the variable speed air handler. Unit #2 is the trane XL16i with the two stage heat pump with comfort R and there variable speed air handler with comfort R. Still not sure what comfort R stands for? Thanks for any advice.

I'm not sold on either heat pump yet. Both are the first models in the line up to offer a two stage heat pump with around 17 seer rateing. I really whould like a single stage high seer rateing, but was told the two stage offers better humidity control. If it does how much better is it? Are we talking about 40% humidity compaired to 50% for a single stage?

Comfrot R is a Trane way of help remove humidity in cooling by ramping the blower up slowly.
here how it works.
first min, the blower runs very slow (50% speed) for a "Fast cool" to get the coil cold.
After a min, the blower then slowly ramps up to 80% speed to Dehumidfy the air.
After about 15 min, the blower will then run 100% speed to cool the home.
If you install the humidstat onto the board, it will keep the blower at 80% till the humidyt is dried out to your set point of comfort.
On Trane, they can set the controls to match your Tonnage of your A/c and set the CFM per ton to match your system.
I have a Trane myself and been very happy with mine.. Mine is just a single stage A/C. (Minnesota summer is not that hot for a long time.)
True, the two stage A/C will do a much better job of removing humidity.. With the long run time on regular days, it will dry out the home.. When it gets really warm out or a house full of company, the unit will kick into 2nd stage to help recover.
If you do go two stage. make sure you do get a two stage t-stat for cooling, and 3 stage for heat I'd suggest the Honeywell Vision Pro TH8320
