I just replaced my White-Rodgers analog thermostat with a Hunter digital one. My compressor now runs in reverse when I set the thermostat to cool - the cold fluid line is hot, and the air comes out hot. The heat works fine.

The old thermostat was a 7 wire setup (labeled R, W, Y, G, X1, O, and E); the digital uses 4 of those seven (R, W, Y, and G). As far as I can tell, the digital thermostat was connected correctly. I went back to the original analog, and it works properly. Any ideas? Thanks!

Your A/C is running backward because it is a heat pump & your new thermostat is not for heat pumps.

I agree with Grady..

Take the hunter back and get a good t-stat like Honeywell. Lately I've been seeing a few guys on here having nothing but trouble with Hunters.

Thanks for the help. I didn't realize the thermostat knew the difference. The Hunter went back to the hardware store, and is being replaced with a Honeywell CT3611R from Ebay. I'm curious as to why the selection at the hardware store is so limited, and why they heat pump thermostats are more expensive...I get the feeling that it's a "feature" lumped in with other features on higher end models. Anyway, thanks again.
