I thought I heard something about the grain raising up on MDF when it is painted. In any case, what is the best primer/ procedure to use before the top paint coat is applied. We'll be using satin white, and they will become small bookshelves. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

I don't think MDF has grain. If you are worried use an oil based primer like coverstain or bin[both from zinsser.com] and lightly sand before you topcoat with what ever you want.

Maybe use some of that waterborne paint from SW. It is tough and you may need it.

If you are using square edged MDF I would ease the edge a little with a sander to help prevent chipping.

I've never had any grain issues when painting MDF. I usually prime it with latex undercoater.
If you intend to place heavy books or objects on the shelves I would recomend either using oil base enamel or waterborne enamel. They dry harder than most latex. With some latex setting heavy objects on them for any period of time often leaves them sticking to the surface.
