Hi All,
I am a new home owner.
I was wondering if anyone had a good way to remove paint from brass door hingers. The previous owner painted over the door hinges and I would like to remove the paint instead of buying new door hinges.
Any suggestions anyone??
Please be specific.....I've tried one brand of latex paint remover and it didn't work very well.

If they are solid brass I would soak them in a bowl of paint stripper
If they are "lacquered-finished" brass that will also take the lacquer off-but to remove the paint you don't have much choice
If they are brass plated, as opposed to solid brass, paint removal could be an issue, and most likely not worth it, or possible

Are you talking about stuff like goof off. If it is real brass try a real paint remover on 1/2 of 1 hinge.

'Goof off' or 'oops' would be the first choice as they are less likely to do any damage. Deglosser or laquer thinner works well [if its only 1 layer of paint] but may remove the 'brass' finish. Paint stripper would be my last choice.
I have used brass or bronze paint on hinges when stripping wasn't feasible.

Take the parts off that you want to remove paint from and soak them in a bucket of ammonia and water over night. This will usually soften the paint up
enough to just peel the paint off. Make sure it properly ventilated as ammonia
has a terrible smell. I have used this method for over 30 years and it will work on allmost everything.
