Our new bathroom still needs a floor tile choice. One option we have is a slate tile that unlike typical slate is finished smooth with a uniform thickness and finished edges. The store claims that once it is sealed it's an acceptable choice, but we're concerned with wear and slipperiness and resealing.

Is slate a good choice for a bathroom floor? What about the pan (floor area) in a full tile shower? Will it accumulate soap scum or need resealing?

Thanks guys! :)

What type of slate is it, from where?, take a sample piece and put in a bucket of water for a day or 2, if the water turns muddy and the slate looks like it's falling apart, don't use it in the shower.:)

Good slate sealed is fine, but don't use it on a shower floor, use 2x2 porcelain tile that looks like stone there.:)

Why isn't it a good idea in the shower?

It's just more maintenance, needs sealing, absorbs moisture.:)
