The drain in my bathtub/shower leaks. The previous owner installed it himself and didn't use plumber's putty or a gasket to seal it.

I am using "Plumber's Choice" choice right now to seal the leak. This only a quick fix so I can use the shower?

How do I get the drain out? Do I have to buy a new drain kit? The drain in there is relatively new. It is the kind that you step on.

I have acces the the piping in the basement.

Thank you for your assistance.

What is "Plumber's Choice"? I hope it isn't permanent.
The flanged part of the tub drain (that you see on the floor of the tub) is screwed down into the body of the drain. There should be plumber's putty under the flange and Teflon tape on its threads. You can buy a tool to unthread the drain, or you could try the handles of a pair of slip-joint pliers.
You might also unscrew the two large screws on the drain lever faceplate, pull it away and check that there is a rubber gasket between the outside of the tub and the top of the overflow pipe.

"Plummer's Choice" is made my Loctite. It is an adhesive sealant made for leaks. I believe it is also called "Handyman's Choice". Whether I will be able to get this crap off is another story.
