i just installed a nice slate backsplash in my kitchen and am preparing to add the grout. is there a way to seal the space between the countertop and the backsplash tiles so that a crack will not emerge between the two?

i have a butcherblock countertop, stained black, and sealed with a satin polyurethane sealer.

any suggestions?

You caulk that joint with a matching color, grout manufacturers have caulk to match their grouts, seal the slate at least twice before grouting and keep the sealer and grout away from the wood top, tape and seal it off until finished.:)

why do i need to seal the slate? also, i have always read that if sealing tiles, it is recommended to do it after grouting. i'm obviously incorrect here -- but what is the reason for sealing before grouting? and are you essentially talking about misting the tiles with a sealant?

Slate is one of the hardest stones to get cean after applying grout, if you seal it well, it will be alot easier to wipe off the stone, wait a week after grouting, then seal it all once more, grout & stone.:)

This a is a good one, follow the instuctions.:)
