I would like to put down some tile in my kitchen. Currently there is linoleum in place and under it is a 1/4" thick backer board and it has tons of staples holding it down, looks like every 3". My question is can I use that as my backer board for my tile? The board is some kind of fiber composit and very smooth.

No, it needs to come up, unless you plan on replacing your new ceramic tile in a year or two.

Concrete underlayment board is recommended for tile installation.

That floor is fine for tile.

But, 3/4" subfloor is the minimum under a backerboard or membrane, I like more plywood, if you have the room, 1/2" more, then a backerboard.:)

You must not have heard about the wonderful modern materials like wedi board or ditra. :D

After using those lightweights I avoid concrete backer as much as possible.

IMO they are well worth the increased material price.
