I need to update my kitchen walls and do not want to contend with the awful red wallpaper stuck to old sheetrock and painted wood. There are lots of cabinets (42) and they almost cover all four walls, so I was hoping just to get some colored tile to fill in the wallpapers spaces. The wallpaper is about 30 years old, a little shiny on the front. Can I put tile over this, or please tell me if I need bare walls. If so, I may just paint. :wall:

Let me see if I can't give you a little hope. If it were me and my house and I was not as tremendously talented as I am I might just try it. ;)
The way I look at it is this. If the wallpaper its stuck to the wall, and if I painted the CLEAN wallpaper with something that stuck to the wallpaper[Bin or Coverstain from Zinsser.com] why would the wallpaper suddenly decide to fall off? It probably wouldn't. Would the tile be so heavy to cause problems? I don't think so since you said there is not much. Is it a good idea? Better than some I have heard, worse than others.
You could just cut out the exposed drywall that is there and replace it then paint or tile.Probably not too much work--less than removing the wall paper. You could also use the Coverstain and paint over it
Obviously the best solution is to not paint or tile over wallpaper. I know that and I think you do too.
Probably better to post or move to the painting or tile forum. It is not really a wallpaper question.
I reserve the right to deny I ever posted this.

:D :D :D In the immortal words of Donnie Van Zant, "You sho' got that right"
I wouldn't tile over it just because of the weight of the tile. I would be scared it would loosen the bond of wallpaper + wall.

have you even TRIED to remove this small amount of wallpaper??? if it's shiny on the front, i bet it would come off pretty easily.
you're willing to take on an entire tiling project, but not willing to strip off some wallpaper? and risk your whole tiling project falling off the wall?
