In addition to the banging refrigerant lines I have with this new Heritage 14 heat pump (1-2 minutes after shutdown lasting for ~40 seconds - I know this isn't normal) this morning I woke up with the air handler running, the fan on the outside unit running but no compressor. This lasted for about an hour where the aux heat cycled but no compressor. Then as I was about to head to work the compressor came back on and seems to be working okay (other than the banging). Is this normal? It's done this twice that I know of. Both times on mornings where the outside temp is right at 32 degrees.

no its not normal sounds like the compressor is cutting out on thermal overload, hard to tell why without checking unit, possably something going on during defrost but pressure switches should prevent this.
