Hi,
I'm preparing to tile a couple of areas in our house. The first is in the living room where the front door enters (split level). I want to have a 6'x3' area of tile for when people first enter, and then carpet the rest. I've got the room stripped down to the subfloor (5/8 TG) and I my first question is what do I need to put down for the tiles (ie: 5/8 ply + 1/2 CB)? If I do this on the small area will the tiles be alot higher than the carpet? Also this problem will occur in the kitchen to other rooms as well. When I prepare the floor for tiles won't it be higher than the other rooms? Finally, what do I use for the transition? Is there something that I have to embed into the tiling to help the transition (like Schluter Ditra products?)??
Thanks

Depends on how the carpet guy wants to install it also, check with them and see what they say if you just have the tile there, they can install their edge with the carpet or no edge at all, or yes, you can use a trim from Schluter and let the carpet guys go up to it.:)
height should be fine, you only need 1/4" backerboard for the tile, if that's too high, use a membrane, usually the carpet and padding bring it up fine, if the tiled section IS higher because of prep work needed, the carpet can be shimmed up to it and not noticable.:)
