Using NextAlarm, I can dial into my DSC 5010 alarm panel and receive what sound like modem connection tones (like a dialup modem on a PC). Does anyone know what I can do from here and where in the DSC documentation is it described?

That dial-in capability is for use with the DSC downloading software. It's really designed for companies that program and setup multiple similar systems. For an end-user or someone setting up a single system, it's literally more work to use the software (which only works with specific modems), than it is to program the system manually.

MrRonFL,
Thank you for the quick reply. That's what I gathered from the documentation. I was just wondering if there were any other tricks you could use the dial-in for, like remotely arming the system, etc., but it doesn't appear so.

Thanks again,
Chris

Nope, for fairly obvious reasons, UL and the the other agencies that certify these systems have issues with remote dial in controls.

For DSC, and most other major brands, there are add-in cards that let you control the alarm via any touchtone phone (For DSC, it's Envoy), that might actually be what you want. A lot of them also have interfaces that you can use with home automation connections.
